Google Wave to be unveiled soon

Google Wave will be unveiled to 100,000 users at the end of September,Announced in May, the real-time communications platform is expected to roll social networking and other web activity into one Google-owned place. At the moment, it's open to just 6,000 developers.

In a blog post on its Wave developer blog, Google said it would open that up to 20,000 more developers over the next month or so, and add 100,000 invited general users by 30 September - you can request an invite here.

"In addition to the developers already using Wave, we will invite groups of users from the hundreds of thousands who offered to help report bugs when they signed up on wave.google.com," wrote Google Wave product manager Dan Peterson.

On that date, Google Wave will also move out of its testing "sandbox" and onto its own domain at Wave.Google.com, the post said.

The news was released as part of Google's Hackathon, which saw developers creating Wave-related tools, including ways to manage groups and subscriptions, games, and an API for blog platform WordPress.

Indeed, Peterson said that Google wants third-party add-ons using the Wave API to integrate as cleanly as possible. "As we have mentioned in the past, our goal is that extensions built by third parties feel fully on-par with Google Wave's native features to users," he said.
